The town of Adare in
County Limerick is regarded as one of the prettiest villages in
Ireland. The broad streets of the town are lined with thatched
cottages punctuated with beautiful stone buildings and picturesque
ruins. The thatched cottages were originally built by the Third Earl
of Dunraven at the gates of his Victorian Manor. Nowadays some of
the cottages house local restaurants, art galleries and crafts
shops, but many are still private dwellings.
Adare is located in the heart of County Limerick just 16km south
west of Limerick City and 40 minutes from Shannon airport. Adare is
the gateway to the beautiful southwest region of Ireland, bordering
the counties of Clare, Kerry, Cork and Tipperary. This location has
helped make Adare a major tourist destination, with many tours of
Ireland's south-west stopping off in the village
Situated on the river Maigue, a tributary of the river Shannon,
Adare is steeped in history and has been designated as a Heritage
Town by the Irish government. The Adare Heritage Centre allows you
to experience this area’s unique history, spanning the years from
1233 to the present day. The story is told through realistic model
enactments and audio visuals in French, Italian, German, Irish and
English. A Guided Tour of Desmond Castle is available throughout the
high season. The centre also houses a Tourist Information Office,
the Dovecot Restaurant, Black Abbey Crafts, Kerry Woollen Mills and
Curran's Heraldry.
The historic Trinitarian Priory is situated next to the Adare
Heritage Center. This is the only recorded Trinitarian monastery in
Ireland. It was originally built by the Fitzgerald Clan for the
Trinitarian order of monks in the early 13th century. This order of
friars was founded in France, following the Holy-Land Crusades, with
the main purpose of raising ransom money in order to rescue
Christian captives taken by the Moors, during the crusade wars. The
monastery was suppressed and badly damaged during the reign of King
Henry VIII. Repaired and enlarged in the mid 19th century, the
building is, today, called the "Holy Trinity Abbey".
The Desmond Castle in Adare is regarded as a fine example of the
medieval fortified castle in Ireland and is one of a number of
outstanding castles situated in County Limerick. It is sited on the
north bank of the River Maigue in a strategic position on a
substantial earlier ringwork where it was able to control traffic on
the river. It was an important stronghold of the Earls of Desmond. A
major programme of conservation and restoration works has been
completed and access to the site is available by guided tour.
In recent years Adare has become a major golf destination with two
18-hole courses - the Adare Golf Club and the Adare Manor Golf
Club. The Adare Golf Club is a superb parkland course situated at the
estate of the Adare Manor Hotel. The course was designed by the
legendary Robert Trent Jones and was the site of the 2007 and 2008
Irish Open. Set in the 840 acres, Robert Trent Jones Senior has
created a masterpiece and he foresees the 18th hole being the best
par 5 in the world. The Adare Manor Golf Club was established in
1900 and is one of Limericks finest woodland courses. Set amongst
the old ruins of the Franciscan Abbey (1300ad) and Adare Castle
(1341ad), Adare Manor Golf Club is steeped in history with
magnificent surroundings. There are also over 20 golf courses within
