The small village of
Ardagh is situated on the R523 approximately 6km north of
Newcastlewest in County Limerick
The world renowned Ardagh Chalice, which ranks with the Book of
Kells as one of the finest known works of Insular art, indeed of
Celtic art in general, is thought to have been made in the 8th
century AD. It was found in 1868, together with a small bronze cup
and four brooches, by two boys, Jim Quinn and Paddy Flanagan,
digging in a potato field on the south-western side of a rath - or
ring fort - called Reerasta, beside the village of Ardagh. It is now
in the National Museum of Ireland.
The Newcastle West Golf Club is located near the village of Adagh.
The course is set in 150 acres of unspoilt rolling countryside. This
18 hole championship course is built to the highest standards on
free draining soil, making it playable all year round. The greens
are constructed to USPGA standards, and the course's hazards include
lakes, bunkers, streams and trees. A practice ground and driving
range are also located on site.
