Askeaton is a town in
north County Limerick located some 27km west of Limerick City. The
town is built on the banks of the River Deel 3 km upstream from the
estuary of the River Shannon.
Askeaton today still looks like a medieval town, the centre piece
being the bridge which date's back to the 15th century. Throughout
the town there are some very interesting old buildings including,
the Knights Templar Tower built in 1298 and the Franciscan Friary
1389. Askeaton Castle was founded around the turn of the 13th
century, on an island in the River Deel. Part of the 15th century
tower on the site remains, itself a replacement of an older tower.
Underlining the status of the town for more than five centuries is
the showpiece 15th-century banqueting hall within the castle. This
hall has finely carved windows and is one of the finest remaining
medieval secular buildings in Ireland.
Matching the historic value of the castle banqueting hall is the
almost perfectly preserved cloister within the ruins of the
Franciscan Friary . The ruins of a 13th century church are located
near the town's Protestant church where the remains of the poet,
Aubrey de Vere are buried.
Ballynacourty Gardens are located in Ballysteen near Askeaton.
Nearly four acres of open fields have been turned into one of County
Limerick’s most beautiful gardens. Some 25 years of toil and
imagination have produced one the the county’s finest gardens.
Highlights include a laburnum walk underplanted with drifts of
lavender and a romantic orchard and vegetable garden
Staying in Askeaton puts the visitor in an excellent position to
enjoy the best of what Limerick has to offer. Askeaton itself is
home to such majestic landmarks as the old Franciscan Friary, and
Askeaton Castle. Why not go fishing in the River Shannon close to
the town, or journey south to nearby Adare where the thatched roof
cottages and old world architecture are memorable. If you fancy a
game of golf, look no further than Adare Manor, and if you're a
shopper then head east to Limerick City. |
