Ballingarry is a
beautiful village located in the west of County Limerick. It is
situated 12 km south west of Adare on the main road from Rathkeale
to Kilmallock
In the village at Knight Street are the remains of 15th century
Ballingarry castle, which was the home of the de Lacy family. The de
Lacy family lost their lands and titles in the Cromwellian and
Jacobite wars. They became part of the Wild Geese who fled the
country in the 1690s. The de Lacys went on to serve in the armies of
various European countries
The hill of Knockfierna dominates the surrounding countryside.
Knockfierna is translated into Irish as Cnoc Fírinne, which means
'the hill of truth'. Locals say that the hill was given this name
because it is possible to get an accurate weather prediction by
observing the hill.
Ballingarry is becoming increasingly popular with tourists, the
highlight of which is the award winning Mustard Seed restaurant
situated at Echo Lodge. Visitors to the village can experience the
tranquillity, clean air and delightful walks in the surrounding
hills and lanes. The central location in the south west of Ireland
makes Ballingarry an ideal touring base.
