Croom is almost in
the exact centre of County Limerick, 22km south west of Limerick
City and just 8km from the historic town of Adare. Croom is situated
on the river Maigue, and was a place of importance from an early
date,
The Croom Mills dominates the village centre. It is home to an award
winning Heritage Centre and fully licensed restaurants, as well as
extensive craft and furniture shops, all overlooking the River
Maigue. The Heritage Centre has a range of displays and an excellent
audio-visual demonstration of the busy days of the mill. Visitors
can actually try their hand at grinding crops for themselves. The
shops are stocked with the best of Irish crafts and designs, and
unusual gifts from around the world.
To the east of the village are the remains of the Cistercian Abbey
founded by the King of the Munster, whose monks later established
the great Abbey of Holy Cross. The 20 metres high remains of a 10th
century round tower lie west on the site of a 9th century church.
Croom is a central base for touring the counties of Kerry, Clare and
Limerick. County Limerick has much to offer the visitor from the
historic city of Limerick to the world famous thatched village of
Adare. The village is central for the archaeological rich Lough Gur,
championship golf at Adare and the market town of Charleville. |
