Foynes is a small
town in County Limerick, located at the edge of hilly land on the
southern side of the Shannon Estuary. It is situated on the main
coast road between counties Limerick and Kerry and is also a short
distance from Tarbert, from where a car ferry operates to Killimer
on the County Clare side of the Estuary. This makes Foynes and ideal
base to tour counties Limerick, Kerry and Clare.
Foynes has a long maritime and tourist tradition. This picturesque
town was the hub for air traffic between the United States and
Europe during the 1930's and 1940's when sea planes used it as
refuelling stop. This is commemorated in the town by the Foynes
Flying Boat Museum, which in addition to an insight into the golden
age of flying boats, also includes a 1940's style cinema and an
Aviation Sculpture Park. It was also in Foynes that Irish Coffee was
first invented.
The Irish Coffee connection is marked with an August festival in the
yachting and watersports centre. Foynes has a very vibrant yacht
club. The marina in Foynes may be accessed at all tidal stages.
Classes for a range of watersports are available. Tuition for all
water based activities is provided by AFAS and ISA trained staff.
The Shannon Estuary offers wonderful shore angling from easily
accessible rocks and beaches at Foynes, Kilteery and Glin. A
resident school of about 80Bottlenose Dolphins has become a major
attraction at the mouth of the Estuary, and they are always glad to
welcome anglers to their rich feeding grounds.
Ruins of a medieval church look out from the hill of Knockpatrick,
south of Foynes, and 8km to the southeast is the 13th century Old
Abbey convent of the Augustinian Canonesses. |
