Glin is a charming
village in the northwest County Limerick. It is on the southern
shores of the River Shannon's estuary, on the road between Foynes
and Tarbert. Glin is located 50km West of Limerick City and the
Tarbert - Killimer Car Ferry is only a 10 minute drive away.
In times past Glin was a famous Salmon Fishery and local fields were
flooded in winter to provide ice for a big salmon export trade
through the Shannon estuary port. A stone “ice house” has been
restored and the old village schoolhouse converted to use as a
visitor centre.
Today Glin is more renowned as a tourist destination. You can spend
the day on Glin Beach or travel along the coast to admire the
beautiful North Kerry landscapes. The championship golf course
Ballybunion is less tan half an hours drive east of Glin. The Cliffs
of Moher, Ailwee Caves, Bunratty Castle & Folk Park, Loophead
Peninsula as well as the Dingle Penisnula, Killarney and The Ring of
Kerry are all within a 1 -2 hour drive away from the village.
Glin is perhaps best known as the location of Glin Castle. One of
the great heritage houses of Ireland, Glin Castle has been home to
the Knights of Glin, the FitzGerald family for some 700 years, and
forms a fabulous residence, rich in elegance and history. Situated
on the shores of the Shannon Estuary, within stunning private
grounds, Glin Castle was built in 1800, a homage to medieval
grandeur and Georgian splendour.
The Shannon Estuary offers wonderful shore angling from easily
accessible rocks and beaches at Glin, Foynes and Kilteery. A
resident school of about 80 Bottlenose Dolphins has become a major
attraction at the mouth of the Estuary, and they are always glad to
welcome anglers to their rich feeding grounds. |
