Hospital is a town in
east County Limerick. The town is on the main Mitchelstown —Limerick
road. It is centrally located between Limerick city (29km),
Tipperary Town (19km) and Mitchelstown (29km).
Hospital is one of the Limerick's larger towns, and hosts a number
of retail outlets and businesses. The town acquired its name from
the crusading Knights Hospitaller who built the cathedral here in
1215. This cathedral has the remains of three interesting tombs,
dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. There is also an ancient
stone circle in nearby Ballinamona.
Kilfrush House in Hospital dates to the early 1800s and was the
Ancestral Home of the Gubbins Family who were involved in Limerick
Politics and horse breeding. Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald
Ford have stayed in Kilfrush House. |
