Kildimo village is
located on the main coast road from Limerick to Listowel/Tralee. It
is situated about 14km south west of Limerick City close to the
River Shannon estuary.
There are several castles in the Kildimo area, including Cullam
castle, Ballyculhane castle and Dromore castle. Dromore castle is
unusual in that it was built in the style of a fairytale castle. The
castle stands on high ground, overlooking Dromore Lake and is
surrounded by woodlands. Built in the second half of the 19 century
by the third Earl of Limerick it was designed by the architect
Edward William Goodwin. Neil Jordan’s film High Spirits was made on
location there in 1987. Near Kildimo are the remains of Killilta
Church, an interesting small 9th and 10th century oratory said to be
the oldest church ruins in county Limerick.
Kildimo is an ideal base for day trips to Killarney, Ballybunion,
Blarney, Cliffs of Moher, the Burren and the Rock of Cashel. The
outdoor person has an excellent choice of activities in and around
Kildimo, including coarse and sea angling, golfing, equestrian
facilities and hiking. The River Maigue which flows past the village
is popular for salmon and trout. Bleach Lough is between Kildimo and
Pallaskenry and is stocked annually with brown trout and rainbow
trout. For horse racing Limerick racecourse in Patrickswell is just
8km away . Thomond Park, spiritual home of Munster Rugby is a 14km
