Kilmallock is a
historic town in south east County Limerick, near the border with
County Cork. The town is located in the upper valley of the Maigue
River which it shares with Adare, Bruree and Croom. The town is
situated in the great plain of Munster known as The Golden Vale. A
short distance from the town are the hills and valleys of the
Ballyhoura Mountain Range where many well developed walking trails
are enjoyed by young and old .
Kilmallock is steeped in history. It traces its’ origins back to an
early Christian monastic settlement situated on the banks of the
local river Lubagh. Kilmallock was transformed by the Norman
invaders from a monastic town to a military town. Long stretches of
the Medieval Town Wall, King Johns Castle and one of the medieval
town gates, Blossom Gate are still to be seen. Two impressive church
buildings dating from the 13th century maintain the religious theme.
The Dominican Priory is regarded as one of the finest monastery
ruins in the country, particularly its’ great East window.
Kilmallock has recently been designated the heritage capital of the
Ballyhoura region of Limerick and North Cork,
