Located on the
southern shores of the river Shannon Mungret is 4 km west of
Limerick city and close to the entrance of the new Shannon Tunnel.
The name Mungret is supposedly derived from the Irish Muine Gairid,
meaning 'the Short Hill', or 'the Short Thicket or Grove'. The
village and surrounding area is recorded to have had 6 churches and
approx 1,500 monks during the Golden Era of monasticism in Ireland,
Extensive ruins of an early Christian monastery exist in Mungret
graveyard. The present day Mungret College overlooks these ruins.
The monastery is said to have been founded by St Nessan, who was
abbot of Mungret in the 6th century
Nearby the village is the 15th-century Carrigogunnell Castle, built
by the Norman de Burgos but passed into the ownership of the O'Brien
chieftains when it was captured and blown up during the 1691 siege
of Limerick. |
