Murroe is located in
north-east Co.Limerick approximately 15 km east of Limerick City and
close to the border with County Tipperary . The village is bounded
by the Slieve Felim Mountains and picturesque countryside. Nearby
towns included Newport and Cappamore.
The village was founded in the 1830s by the Barrington family who
built Glenstal Abbey. The Abbey was originally designed as a castle
in 12th century style. It has a great gate and a massive drum tower
that is similar to the one at Windsor Castle. The Barringtons moved
to England and sold the castle and its lands to the Benedictine
Order in 1927. It became an abbey in 1957. Visitors are welcome to
Glenstal Abbey. They can walk in the extensive grounds and in the
17th century terrace garden. The Abbey grounds are particularly
beautiful at rhododendron time, when the hills are a blaze of
colour.
Murroe is also situated near an older monastic settlement in Abbey
Owney and is home to a number of historical houses and buildings,
such as Brittas Castle and Thomond Scout centre.
Murroe is an ideal base for walking holidays with the Slieve Felim
Way and the Clare Glen Loop walks originating in the village.
Stretching from Murroe to Silvermines Village in County Tipperary -
a distance of approximately 36 km - the Slieve Felim Way takes you
into the heart of beautiful, rural countryside. Along the way, you
encounter a series of unspoilt hills and mountain. The Clare Glens
is a wooded area along the banks of the Clare River, which separates
counties Limerick and Tipperary. The scenery is breathtaking, with
wild dense forest combined with the calm rushing of the crystal
clear waters. The Glens consist of a picturesque red sandstone gorge
through which the Clare River flows and displays numerous
waterfalls. |
