Newcastle West is a
town in west County Limerick. It is located 42km south west of
Limerick City between the towns of Rathkeale and Abbeyfeale. The
town is the largest town in the county outside Limerick city. It is
located on the banks of the River Arra which flows into the River
Deel. Newcastle West sits in the centre of a large bowl shaped
valley in West Limerick, known at one time as the valley of the Wild
Boar.
Newcastle West takes it's name from the castle of the Earls of
Desmond. In the remains of the castle, just off the town square, are
two great banqueting halls - the Desmond Hall and the Great Hall, a
peel tower, a keep, a bastion and a curtain wall. The Desmond
Banqueting Hall dates from the 15th century and has been recently
restored and is open to the public, for guided tours May to
September. The area in front of the banqueting hall was the site of
the Protestant Church, built in 1777.
The town square in Newcastle West is one of the finest town squares
in Munster. The town is clustered with buildings of historic
interest. These include the the Courthouse built in 1842 and the old
Railway Station built in 1867. Other buildings include St Ita's
Hospital, the Parish Hall, the Carnegie Library and the Courtenay
Boy's School.
The Castle Demesne in Newcastle West has over 100 acres of parkland
with numerous forms of flora and fauna as well as playing areas and
sports fields. Sli na Slainte is a walking trail which includes the
town square and the Demesne. The Great Southern Trail is a walking
trail developed along the disused Limerick - Tralee railway line. It
offers an interesting scenic walk between Newcastle West and Ardagh
or Newcastle West and the Old Mill. Situated in a valley, Newcastle
West is also surrounded by walking amenities including the
Mullaghareirk Mountain Trails & Knockfierna Hill.
Newcastle West has a full programme of festivals and other organised
events throughout the year. Seachtain Na Gaeilge is a week of
activities held in mid-March to express the wealth of interest in
Irish language and culture. Fleadh Ceoil Luimni is a Traditional
Irish Music Festival held during the June Bank Holiday Weekend. The
Newcastle West Arts Festival is held most years in early Summer with
street theatre, literary, drama, music events . The Newcastle West
Flower Show takes place in Mid-August
Newcastle West Golf Club is beautifully situated Irish parkland golf
course, set amidst mature woodland in the gently rolling landscape
