Shanagolden is a
small village located in north west County Limerick. The village is
located on the regional road between Foynes and Newcastlewest.
The ruins of Shanid Castle, an important Anglo-Norman stronghold, is
located on Shanid Hill a short distance away from the village. The
castle was constructed in 1230 on land associated with the
FitzGerald family which settled in the area after 1169 and was a
fortress of the Knights of Glin before being burned in 1641. An
ancient ring fort had once occupied the top of the hill.
St. Katherine's Abbey, is located in Monisternagalliaghduff - a
valley about 3km east of Shanagolden. Known as the "Old Abbey", it
is a former Augustinian nunnery founded in 1298 and dissolved in
1541. It is one of the earliest recorded nunneries in Ireland.
Shanagolden is situated 4km off the main coastal route from Limerick
to Tralee making it an ideal base for touring Tralee, Killarney,
Limerick and Ballybunion. The village is also within easy driving
distance of the Tarbert - Killimer ferry crossing which links
Counties Kerry and Clare. |
