Abbeylara is a
village in the east of County Longford, Ireland, located 3km east of
Granard and close to the borders with Counties Cavan and Westmeath.
The name Abbeylara is derived from a monastery, the great Abbey of
Lerha, founded in 1205 by Risteárd de Tiúit for the Cistercian
monks. The monastery was dissolved in 1539, although its ruins are
still apparent on the approach to the village.
Abbeylara is an historic village with meandering streets leading to
the surrounding countryside and forest walks. Its proximity to the
River Inny and the renowned fishing lakes - Lough Derragh and Lough
Kinale - makes it a popular destination for visiting anglers. The
lakes have a plentiful supply of trout, tench, bream and pike. Each
year the local angling clubs hold regular competitions on the lakes.
Both lakes and the River Inny are navigable for small boats. The
village is also just 7 km west of Lough Sheelin that straddles the
Cavan Westmeath border.
An ancient earthenwork, the Duncla (Irish for "fortified ditch") or
Black Pig's Dyke, which runs south-eastwards from Lough Gowna to
Lough Kinale, goes through the larger parish of Abbeylara, and
passes about 1 km north of the village. The only remains of stone
circles in the Midlands region are to be found at Cloughernal and
Cartronbore, in the parish of Abbeylara. |
