Cloondara - or
Clondra - is an attractive waterside village in west County Longford
located close to the border with County Roscommon. It is situated on
the banks of the River Camlin and the River Shannon 8 km west of
Longford Town. The village of Termonbarry lies to the west of the
village, on the opposite bank of the Shannon.
At the heart of Cloondara is Richmond Harbour, the terminus of the
Royal Canal. This cut-stone harbour is one of the most imposing on
the River Shannon. Richmond Harbour is forty seven locks from
Spenser Lock in Dublin. The village was purpose-built to cater for
the canal traffic - a row of one, two and three-storey gabled
Georgian blocks to house the harbour master, the lock-keeper, the
inn, storage and office facilities. The old stone mill with its weir
and millpond is a landmark building in the village
There is plenty of fishing around Clondra for the keen fisherman.
Local amenities include the Royal Canal, Richmond Harbour, the
Camlin River and. of course, the Shannon itself.
Cloondara village encapsulates a genuine atmosphere of river
holidays, with Richmond harbour always busy with boats and cruisers
from the Shannon. This pretty waterside village is a picture
postcard of weirs, locks and water. |
