Edgeworthstown is a
village in east County Longford located close to the border with
County Westmeath. It is 14km from Longford Town and 29km from
Mullingar.
Edgeworthstown is also known as Mostrim which comes from the irish
name Meathas Troim meaning fertile ridge. The anglicised name comes
from the Edgeworth family who first settled in the locality in 1583.
The most famous members of this family were father and daughter
Richard Lovell Edgeworth and Maria. Richard was a renowned inventor
and surveyor while Maria was a well-known novelist of her day. Today
she is best known for her novel Castle Rackrent. Edgeworthstown
house, the family residence was visited by Sir Walter Scott and
William Wordsworth. It is still in use today as a private nursing
home. The Edgeworth family vault, in which Richard Lovell and Maria
are interred is in the Churchyard of Saint John’s. Isola Wilde,
sister of Oscar Wilde is buried there too.
The picturesque village of Ardagh is situated just 7km from
Edgewothstown. This attractive estate village won the National Tidy
Towns award on several occassions. There are important Early
Christian sites in and near Ardagh, including the Church of St. Mel.
The River Inny flows through counties Westmeath and Longford. It
flows through a number of lakes including loughs Sheelin, Kinale,
Derravaragh and eventually reaching Lough Ree before joining the
Shannon. These lakes are renowned for the coarse and pike fishing
available, attracting fishermen from both home and abroad. The river
and lakes are all within easy driving distance of Edgeworthstown. |
