Longford Town is
situated right in the heart of Ireland, on the south bank of the
beautiful river Camlin . It is a thriving town and the County
administrative centre. It is ideally placed as a tourist centre for
the Lakeland District of the Irish Midlands and the beautiful
Shannon River.
There is much to attract the tourist to Longford. Saint Mels
Cathedral and Saint Johns Church, both dating from the 19th Century,
stand at the East and West entrances to the town. The visitor is
well catered for in Longford with activities to suit all tastes. The
town is well laid out with wide streets and pleasant buildings. It
is a thriving town of colour and commercial activity. Its bright
shops and stores are brim full of all types of goods, and many
surprises, if you take the time to look. Longford town also boasts a
state-of-the-art 200-seat theatre, and a four-screen multiplex
cinema, with restaurants
The Mall is a beautifully landscaped park on the banks of the River
Camlin. This park is ideal for picnics, walks or sporting
activities.
Longford courthouse is the oldest building in the town and was built
on the main street in 1793, probably on the site of an earlier
building. The County museum containing many artefacts and providing
a genealogical service is located in the old post office in the main
street. The dome of the 19th Century St. Mels Cathedral may be seen
from quite a long way from outside the town. There is an
ecclesiastical museum, situated at the rear of this Cathedral.
The County Longford Golf Club is located just outside Longford on
the Old Dublin Road. Founded in 1894 it was redesigned in 2005. It
is an 18 hole parkland course with mature trees and a stream coming
into play at a number of holes. Additional water features have also
been introduced, especially at the signature 13th hole. It's a
scenic place to play golf with panoramic views of Longford town and
the surrounding countryside to be savoured on almost every hole of a
course which measures over 6700 yards and has a par of 72
In and around the Longford Town area there is excellent coarse
fishing available. The Camlin river at the town's outskirts provides
good access, hard bank and reed free swims. Fish stock includes
large rudd, bream, tench and some roach. The Inny River has access
points at 15 to 20 km from the town. The Shannon River at
Tarmonbarry, Clondra, and at Lanesborough is noted for its hot water
stretch below the power station. There is excellent game angling for
brown trout on the Inny, some stretches of the Camlin and at Lough
Gowna. Pike Angling is available at Lough Gowna, the Shannon River
and on Lough Ree. |
