Newtownforbes is
located in the west of County Longford, 6 km north west of Longford
town. It is close to the commanding Corn Hill, which dominates the
skyline to the north east of the locality
Newtownforbes is a lively village, beautifully maintained by an
active tidy towns committee, and is an ideal spot for tourist,
visitor or friend. Many of the shopfronts in Newtownforbes are
finished traditionally and tastefully. Newtownforbes has a thriving
Development Group which operates the 'Village Tea Shop'. Always
worth a visit the 'Tea Shop' is also houses a Tourist Information

from all over the midlands. It also contains a second hand bookshop.
Between the village and Lough Forbes lies the beautiful demesne of
Castleforbes, a fine Castellated Mansion dating from the 17th
century and is the seat of the Ears of Granard. The Forbes family
resided in Castleforbes, which has its entrance in the centre of the
village. Newtownforbes is not strictly classed as an estate village
but the road is unusually wide for such a small village.
Newtownforbes is located beside Lough Forbes complex, which has been
designated a Natural Heritage Area and a Special Area of
Conservation. Lough Forbes is a small lake noted for its pike
fishing, situated downstream of Rooskey on the River Shannon. The
lake holds stocks of bream, roach and hybrids. There is no road
access to the lake, and it is only possible to fish this area from a
boat. |
