Carlingford is a
beautiful coastal town in northern County Louth. It nestles between
the shores of Carlingford Lough and the foothills of Slieve Foy,
(sometimes known as Carlingford Mountain) and it enjoys breathtaking
views of the majestic Mourne Mountains. Located on the road between
Greenore Point and Omeath , Carlingford is approximately 27 km north
of Dundalk 90 km north of Dublin and 11 km south of the
border with Northern Ireland
Carlingford is an area of outstanding natural beauty surrounded by
the Cooley and Mourne Mountains and of course Carlingford Lough.
There was little surprise in 2008 when the town and the surrounding
Cooley Peninsula was awarded the title of European Destinations of
Excellence – Tourism & Intangible Heritage in a competition funded
and organised by Failte Ireland with support from the European
Union. This neat town
frequently does well in the National Tidy Towns Competition and has
been a past winner of the overall award.
Carlingford is a magical village full of character and is one of the
best preserved mediaeval villages in Ireland. The village is a
delight to stroll around with its narrow Mediaeval streets full of
shops, restaurants, traditional pubs, art galleries, coffee and
craft shops. It is home to the Carlingford Adventure Centre where
you can choose from a range of both land and sea based activities.
The inherent natural beauty of Carlingford can equally be
appreciated on land or sea. Guided walking tours, horse trekking
through the mountains, sailing, yacht charter, sea angling,
windsurfing, canoeing, water skiing can all be enjoyed in and around
the town.
Catch fish in Carlingford Lough in the morning and, later on, learn
to cook it to perfection at the wonderful Ghan House Cookery School.
And whether you are an experienced walker or just wanting some
outdoor activity a walk in the Cooley Mountains will revive as you
take in the breathtaking views and savour the history and heritage
of the epic Story of the Brown Bull of Cooley – the Tain.
The area hosts a number of year round festivals and organised
events, from the Birds on the Bay and a Traditional Irish Winter
School to the Tain Walking Festival in March and the famous Oyster
Festival in September.
There are two fantastic golf courses set in the beautiful Cooley
countryside a short distance from Carlingford. The beautiful
Greenore Golf Club is less than 5km away. Greenore is a magnificent
course with a good mix of traditional links and heathland on the
outside holes. An excellent test of Golf with testing wind shots
into small greens, which are well bunkered with water in play on
many holes. The Ballymasconlon Hotel Golf Club 18 hole golf course,
designed by the internationally renowned Craddock & Ruddy is 12 km
from Carligford. Set amidst the historic Cooley landscape the course
is as challenging as it is rewarding.
A unique blend of natural beauty, ancient mediaeval streets,
spectacular panoramas, myths & legends combine with a modern day
tourism infrastructure to make Carlingford a true gem of Irish
Tourism. |
