Castlebellingham is
an attractive country village in mid County Louth. It is located
just off the M1 motorway 15km south of Dundalk and 15 km north of
Drogheda. Dublin Airport is only 35 minutes away.
The village was formerly known as Gernonstown. The name
Castlebellingham comes from the Bellingham family who owned the
manor house in the village. The manor house is now a hotel and is
situated on the site of the former Bellingham castle. The village
also includes a number of Widow's Almshouses, cottages and other
dwelling houses constructed by the Bellingham family probably to the
design of William Vitruvius Morrison.
A walk from the village square in Castlebellingham to the coast at
Annagassan is a very pleasant experience. Situated just 3.5km north
of Castlebellingham is the village of Dromiskin. This village was an
important ecclesiastical centre from the 5th century. A Round Tower
from the early monastery still stands in the churchyard of the
Church of Ireland. There are also the remains of a ringed-cross in
the Celtic style and a carved spiral pillar of 9th/10th century
close by.
Castlebellingham There is a beautiful coastline running the entire
length of the county and the nearest blue flag beach to
Castlebellingham is only 6km away at the Port Beach. The nearby
Clogherhead Peninsula is designated a Natural Heritage Area and has
uninterrupted views of the Mourne Mountains. There are beautiful
walks along the many beaches, along Clogherhead Head and also along
the Boyne Valley. Keen fisherman do not have far to travel as the

can be organised from the harbours at Annagassan and Port Oriel.

hunts are the Louth Foxhounds and the Oriel Harriers and they hunt
twice a week in the area. |
