Dromiskin is a small
village in County Louth. It is situated 10km south of Dundalk and
just 3km north of Castlebellingham.
Dromiskin is 1km inland from the Irish Sea coast, and is located in
one of Louth's most historical areas. The village was an important
ecclesiastical centre from the 5th century and was home to a
monastery for hundreds of years. It was the residence of the
Archbishops of Armagh during the 14th century. The site for the
monastery was picked as it is a local high point; it is also where a
round tower was built and still remains.
From the tower there is a view of all of Dundalk Bay and the
surrounding countryside. There are also the remains of a
ringed-cross in the Celtic style and a carved spiral pillar of
9th/10th century close by. 1.6km west of the village stands a 15th
century tower house. |
