Greenore is a small
town and deep water port on Carlingford Lough in County Louth. It is
located on the southern shores of Carlingford Lough 3km south east
of Carlingford village. It is approximately 19 km form both Dundalk
and Newry.
This quaint late 19th century village was established after the
railway connecting Newry and Dundalk to the deep-water port of
Greenore opened in 1867 to provide passenger and freight link with
the west coast of Britain. There are fine views of Carlingford
Lough, Slieve Foye, and the Mourne Mountains
Greenore Golf Club is situated along shores of Carlingford Lough in
the heart of the Cooley Peninsula, The course is a superb 18-hole
links, founded in 1896 and has been enhanced by a magnificent new
clubhouse. During the course of a round the golfer can enjoy superb
views of both Carlingford Lough and the Mountains of Mourne.
Greenore pier is a popular fishing spot in summer and the shore
around the lighthouse at the mouth of the Lough provides excellent
sport for an array of species including mackerel, sea trout, pollack,
spurdog, ray and dogfish. Bass can also be taken in this area with
spinning offering best opportunities. |
