Knockbridge is a
small village in County Louth, Ireland located 6 km south west of
Dundalk. It is situated in a rural setting of gently rolling
farmland and takes it's name from the "Bridge of Knockmill". This
was part of the lands of the former abbey of saints Peter and Paul
of Knock established in 1140.
Knockbridge has performed very well in the National Tidy Towns
competition in recent years and was a Gold Medal winner in 2007. In
2008 the village won the Best Kept Village Award for the 32 counties
of Ireland.
In a field, on the Dundalk road 1 km from the village, stands Cloch
a Farmore (Cuchulainn's Stone). Cuchulainn mortally wounded strapped
himself against this stone as he was dying so that his enemies might
think he was still alive. Only when a raven landed on his shoulder
did they know that Cuchulainn was dead.
Stephenstown House, a large ruined Victorian house, once owned by
the Fortescue family, stands beside the River Fane about 1 km
outside the village. Stephenstown Pond, adjacent to the house was
redeveloped in the mid 1990's and is now a public amenity that
includes a carp fishery. The pond and fishery consists of 2 hectares
(5 acres) of natural woodland, grassland, willow copse, water meadow
and pond habitats and is packed with bird and animal wildlife |
