Omeath is a lovely
resort village in the far north east of County Louth. It is roughly
mid way between Dublin and Belfast, very near the County Louth and
County Armagh / County Down border. The village is 6 km from the
medieval village of Carlingford and about 8 km from the bustling
city of Newry.
This quaint coastal village enjoys a wonderful setting between the
Cooley Mountains and the beautiful Carlingford Lough, with views
across the water to the Mountains of Mourne in Northern Ireland.
The Cooley Peninsula to the south of the village is composed of tall
hills, wooded valleys and the Slieve Foy mountain, which together
form a picture-postcard backdrop for the village. A summer ferry
service takes passengers across the lough from Omeath to Warrenpoint
in County Down.
The countryside around Omeath is ideal terrain for cycling and
hill-walking. Heading south into the gentler rural landscapes of
Louth, the visitor can explore the county's numerous historic
monuments, castles, abbeys and other ancient buildings.
Outdoor activities in Omeath include angling, sailing, golf and
horse-riding, while the Tain Adventure Centre, beautifully situated
on the shores of Carlingford Lough, provides all kinds of sports,
from rock-climbing and abseiling to windsurfing and kayaking. The
people of Louth traditionally enjoy street parties and celebrations,
and Omeath is no exception, holding a fun-filled village festival
every summer |
