Tullyallen is a
pretty village 5km north-west of Drogheda in County Louth.
Tullyallen is located in the beautiful and historical Boyne Valley.
Its name in Irish - Tulach Aluinn - beautiful hill - aptly describes
its location . The hill rises out of some of the richest land in
south Louth and an extensive prospect is afforded on every side. To
the south and west are the battlefield of the Boyne and King
William’s Glen. In front, across the river, is Oldbridge with Donore
Hill and Bellewstown, while the landmarks of Drogheda with its
church spires and Lourdes Hospitals, can be seen in the east, across
the new Boyne Cable Bridge with its 390 feet high pylon. Behind to
the north are the much higher hills of Ardagh, Coolfore and Rath,
with Mount Oriel and Mullaghash in the distance.
The earliest mention of Tullyallen is contained in the writings of
Lanigan who tells us that “there was a monastery at Tullyallen
founded by St.Colman who died in 726 AD”. This was maintained for
over four hundred years until the great Abbey of Mellifont was
founded nearby in 1142.
Tullyallen is situated close to a number of historic sites including
Newgrange, Knowth, Dowth, Monasterboice Round Tower and to the site
of one of the Williamite encampments during the Battle of the Boyne.
It is also close to the important and historical port town of
Drogheda. |
