Achill Island is
situated off the west coast of County Mayo and is the largest island
off the coast of Ireland. Achill covers an area of 148 km2 and is
linked to the mainland by the Michael Davitt Bridge between the
villages of Achill Sound and Polranny.
On Achill Island you can visit the charming villages of Dooega and
Dooagh, the high sea cliffs at Slievemore and Minaun, the superb
beaches at Keel and Keem, under the Achill Head. The renowned
Atlantic Drive takes you on a journey of scenic grandeur, a must for
all visitors to Achill.
Achill has two adventure centres which offer windsurfing, sailing,
abseiling, diving and many other activities. The waters around
Achill Island and the Curraun Peninsula are rich in sealife and
varieties of fish, making the area one of the best sea angling
venues in Ireland. Whether sea angling from one of the islands
registered charter boats or casting from from the shore, fishing on
Achill is a popular outdoor activity. With much of the higher land
on Achill held in commonage, the island offers free, open access for
hillwalking enthusiasts. Achill has a very scenic nine-hole golf
course at Keel that is open to visitors at a very reasonable rate. A
9 hole pitch and putt course is also available on the island.
The Achill Seafood Festival is held annually in July and has
established itself as one of Mayo's most popular festival weekends.
The Festival offers wonderful gourmet seafood, with plenty of ceol,
music agus craic in the many traditional pubs in the evenings. Scoil
Acla is one of Ireland's oldest established summer schools offering
workshops in traditional music, set dancing and Ceili Workshops. The
summer school features art exhibitions, painting courses and of
course, Gaeilge Acla - the Irish of Achill.
