Achill Sound is a
village on the east side of Achill Island in County Mayo. Achill
Sound is also the name of the waterway separting Achill Island from
the Corraun Peninsula on the mainland. The Michael Davitt Bridge is
a swing bridge over this narrow waterway - with the village of
Polranny on the mainland side of the bridge and Achill Sound on the
island side.
Achill Sound is the main shopping area on the island. There are
facilities for swimming, boating and fishing and boating excursions
can be made along the coast and to other nearby islands. Deep sea
fishing is also available, with Porbeagle shark providing exciting
sport.
Achill Sound is known as Gob a’Choire in Irish, which refers to an
area south of the bridge where the incoming tide from Clew Bay to
the south meets with the tide from Blacksod Bay to the north.
Achill Sound is an ideal base to explore Achill Island and the
Western part of County Mayo. It lies within the Mayo Gaeltacht. |
