Balla is a small town
in the geographical centre of County Mayo situated on the main road
between Castlebar and Claremorris. The town owes its origin to a
monastery established there in the 7th century by St. Cronan (St
Mochua). The site is marked today by a round tower (10m) and a
medieval altar.
Balla is set among parklands, hills and lakes and offers the visitor
an opportunity to share in the living tradition of rural Ireland,
combined with the comfort and amenities of modern times. Balla
offers the fisherman access to numerous nearby lakes which have an
abundance of salmon and trout. In the Balla region there is a
variety of trails and forest walks to suit both the Sunday stroller
and the more experienced hiker.
In ancient times the town was known as 'Ros Dairbhreach', which
means 'The Height of the Oak Wood'. The continuing importance of the
oak to the local community is reflected in the appropriately named
"Dawn Oak 2000" project. At the beginning of the millennium, 2000
oak trees were planted, creating a new wood in Balla's town park.
Patrick W. Nally after whom the Nally Stand in Croke Park is named,
was born at Rockstown House, near Balla. He organised two national
athletic events in Balla, which were an impetus to the establishment
of the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1884. There is a Celtic Cross
dedicated to his memory in the town.
With its central location in County Mayo and its proximity to Knock
International Airport, Balla is an ideal base for anyone needing
access to the rest of county Mayo and indeed the West coast of
Ireland. |
