Ballintubber - or
Ballintober - is an historic and picturesque village in the heart of
County Mayo. The village is set against the backdrop of the Partry
Mountains and is situated 13km south of Castlebar - the county town
of Mayo. It is also a short distance to the shores of Lough Carra
and Lough Mask - two of the best fishing lakes in the country
Ballintubber derives its name from the Gaelic ‘Baile an Tobair’
which means the village of the well - St Patrick’s Well. The village
lies on the well travelled pilgrimage route to Croagh Patrick,
Ireland’s Holy Mountain.
The village and its surrounding area is rich in history and
historical sites including Ballintubber Abbey, Mayo Abbey and the
round tower at Aghagower. Without doubt Ballintubber Abbey on the
shores of Lough Carra is the most important historical site in the
area. It was founded in 1216 by King Cathal Crobdearg O’Conor.
Ballintubber Abbey has been carefully restored over the years and
the abbey church is now the only functioning church in Ireland that
was founded by an Irish King. The Abbey has become known as 'the
Abbey that refused to die'. In recent years Ballintubber Abbey
become a very popular wedding venue for couples seeking a unique and
historic setting. The abbey has seen many ‘celebrity weddings’
including the marriage of Hollywood actor Pierce Brosnan to Keely
Shaye Smith and Westlife singer Shane Filan to Gillian Walsh.
There is a 9 hole par 3 golf course surrounding the beautiful
Ballintubber Abbey, with views of Lough Carra and Croagh Patrick. |
