Bangor - or Bangor
Erris - is a small village in North West County Mayo. This
attractive village is situated on the banks of the Owenmore River 2
km south of Carramore Lake. This location makes it an anglers haven
and a centre for wild Atlantic salmon and sea trout fishing
Bangor is the gateway to the Erris Peninsula. It was founded by
Major Bingham around 1820 as a stopping place for people travelling
to this beautiful peninsula. The village nestles at the foot of the
"Bangor Trail" a 35km mountain pass that travels south across the
Nephin Beg Mountain Range towards Newport. The internationally
renowned Ceide Fieds are 30 km to the north west of Bangor Erris and
the town of Belmullet is just 18 km to the west
The magnificent Carne Golf Links near Belmullett is just 15 km from
Bangor. This top rated golf course lies in unspoiled sand dunes
overlooking Blacksod Bay and the wild Atlantic Ocean. It was the
last links course to be designed by the late Eddie Hackett and it is
now believed by many who have played it to be his greatest work. |
