Castlebar is the
county town of Mayo and is located right in the heart of the county.
The town is linked by railway to Dublin and the neighbouring Mayo
towns of Westport and Ballina. Is is located about 45 km west of
Knock Airport.
The castle from which the town derived its name, was established in
the middle of the 13th century by one of the de Barra (Barry) family
from Buttevant in County Cork. Until the 18th century Castlebar was
the capital of the 'Provisional Republic of Connacht'. A 1798
monument is located at the entrance to the Mall in memory of the
French soldiers who died on Irish soil that year. The elegant
tree-lined Mall, once a cricket pitch of the infamous Lord Lucan, is
now a town park.
Castlebar is a town steeped in history with one of the oldest
buildings being Christchurch whose foundation stones were laid in
1739. This fine Church was renovated in the early 1800s - the
feature clock tower was added during this renovation. The Museum of
Country Life is located on the outskirts of Castlebar, and is the
only branch of the National Museum of Ireland located outside
Dublin.
Castlebar is now a developing, commercial and services centre and is
one of the fastest growing towns in the country. The town has
numerous attractions and facilities for the visitor. With a location
halfway between Mayo's two great lake systems - Lough Cullin and
Lough Conn to the north and Lough Carra and Lough Mask to the south
- Castlebar is an internationally renowned angling centre.
Mayo has a number of great walking trails. These include the
renowned Castlebar Walks - these walks originate in Castlebar and
extend into the surrounding countryside .The Castlebar Walks provide
the main routes that make up the Castlebar International Four Day
Walks Festival. Another major annual festival in Castlebar is the
Blues Festival.
Castlebar Golf Club is situated 3km south-east of the town It was
founded in 1910, making it one of the oldest golf courses in the
west of Ireland. It is a mature 18 hole parkland course that enjoys
a gentle, rural setting. It is a delightful course that will suit
all levels of player.
Castlebar is centrally located in Mayo making it an ideal base for
touring this beautiful county. Sites such as the Turlough Round
Tower, Ballintuber Abbey, Croagh Patrick, The Ceide Fields, Foxford
Woollen Mills, Moore Hall and Ashford Castle are all within easy
