Claremorris is a
small town in south Mayo which lies at the junction of the N17 and
the N60 national routes. It is located between Galway City (62km)and
Sligo Town (78km)and is centrally situated in the province of
Connaught – and yet just 45km from the Atlantic coastline at
Westport
Claremorris is a picturesque town steeped in history and folklore
and with a relaxed way of life.
The town sits at the bottom of a valley with all roads which lead to
the town following rolling drumlins, eskers, woods and lakes. The
majestic Croagh Patrick is visible to the west of the town.
Claremorris has a good mixture of natural amenities and leisure
facilities and is perfectly positioned to lend itself to family
holidays. Attractions include the McMahon Park, with walks and
picnic areas, Clare Lake, fishing on Lough Carra and the world
renowned Lough Mask. The famous Marian Shrine in nearby Knock (10km)
sees hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. The town also
hosts the Claremorris Open Art Exhibition and annual Drama and
Summer Festivals.
Situated only 2km miles from the town centre on the former estate of
Lord Oranmore and Browne, Claremorris Golf Club is a spectacular par
73 layout measuring 6131 metres and has USGA spec sand based greens
that are comparable to the best in the country. The course is an 18
hole parkland course designed by Irish International and Walker Cup
player the late Tom Craddock
Also 2km form the town centre is the Claremorris Saddlery &
Equestrian Centre - one of Irelands premier Equestrian Centres. The
riding school caters for all standards of rider from the complete
beginner to the budding international. There is no formality and the
visitor will quickly feel at home. |
