Crossmolina is a
small town which sits on the River Deel near the northern shores of
Lough Conn in County Mayo. The town is in the heart of the Moy
Valley Region and is about 9 km west of Ballina.
Crossmolina and its environs is a region renowned for its fishing
with Lough Conn and the River Deel on its doorstep with the
famousRiver Moy a short distance away. The river Deel rises in the
Nephin Beg mountains and flows for 40km through moorland and
pastures, and through Crossmolina, before entering the northern end
of Lough Conn. The river offers a variety of angling experiences
ranging from dry fly fishing for trout together with spring salmon
fishing, in the lower reaches, to lively brown trout and grilse
fishing in the remote upper reaches. Lough Conn itself also offers
excellent trout and salmon fishing.
For the hill walkers the Nephin Beg Range to the south of
Crossmolina offers excellent walks with Nephin Mountain being the
highest peak in the range. There are a number of shorter walks
around the town itself including the Enniscoe House Loop Walk and
the Kenagh Loop Walk
At nearby Enniscoe (3km) there are wonderful historic gardens
featuring a Victorian walled garden, an organic walled garden and
19th century pleasure grounds that extend down to the shores of
Lough Conn.
Although dating to early 18th century, the walled garden now
reflects the Victorian period with plants of that era, and many fine
architectural features that have been restored under the Great
Gardens of Ireland Restoration Programme.
