Foxford is a small
village 16 km south of Ballina in County Mayo. The village stands on
the main road from Swinford to Ballina and has a railway station
served by trains between Dublin and Ballina.
Situated between the Ox and Nephin Mountains, Foxford lies on the
River Moy, a renowned salmon-fishing river. The village is also in
close proximity to Loughs Conn and Cullin, which have good brown
trout fishing.
The Foxford Way is a long distance walk (86km) which complements the
Western Way, Mayo's longest walk, extending it south through the Ox
Mountains, from Foxford to Straide and around Lough Cullin. This
waymarked tourist trail completes a circular tour of North East Mayo
and takes in roads, bogland, archaeological sites, lakeshores, and
river banks.
In October 2011 the Foxford Ramblers Walking Club held the first
annual Foxford Walking Festival. A range of walks were planned to
suit many levels of fitness and varieties of interests. The festival
is designed to give walkers a chance to experience the beautiful
scenery of the area and meet fellow walkers from throughout Ireland
and beyond. The Festival celebrates the re-opening and re-marking of
the Foxford Way and the new local loop walks.
Foxford developed around the eponymous Woollen Mills which have been
producing the famous Foxford blankets since 1892. The history of
these mills, famous for their rugs and other woven products, is told
in audio-visual form in the visitor centre, the Foxford Experience.
The trials and tribulations of post-famine Mayo form a dramatic
introduction to the tour of the mills, during which visitors can see
Foxford rugs and tweeds being made.
Admiral William Brown, creator and first admiral of the Argentine
Navy, was born in Foxford in 1777. Admiral Brown is regarded as a
hero of the Argentine War of Independence, and was the defender of
Buenos Aires during the Argentina-Brazil War. Statues and monuments
to him are found throughout Argentina, and his name is honoured with
several streets, squares, towns, and associations. A memorial bust
of the Admiral William Brown stands proudly in Foxford today. |
