Kilkelly is a village
located just south of Ireland West Airport Knock, lying between the
Airport (9km) and the town of Knock itself (12km). The village is
along the N17, a national primary road running between Galway and
Sligo.
The river Trimogue flows through Kilkelly and Lake Nambrackragh is
within walking distance of the village centre. Lake Nambrackragh is
an idyllic area for fishing or for family picnics. Major landscaping
work has been carried out in recent years by the local angling club
and by the community council.
Urlaur Abbey lies just 4km from Kilkelly on the banks of Urlaur
Lake. This monastic settlement was founded in 1430 by the Dominicans
and has been remarkably well preserved.
A famous ballad - "Kilkelly, Ireland" – has put the village on the
map. This haunting song was written by American songwriter Peter
Jones and draws its inspiration from a series of ten surviving
letters written on behalf of Byran and Elizabeth Hunt by the local
school master to their emigrant son in America. |
