Kilmaine is a village
located between Ballinrobe and Shrule in south County Mayo. The
village is just 13 km to the east of Cong village - the location of
Ashford Castle with Lough Mask to the north and Lough Corrib to the
south – both excellent fishing lakes. Galway city is 20km away to
the south.
There are a number of noteworthy historical landmarks in the
Kilmaine locality. The large Raunaskerra ringfort was once an
inauguration site for local rulers. The local Catholic Church (St
Patrick’s) exhibits some fine Harry Clarke stained glass windows,
depicting the Nativity.
The beautifully
restored Castle at Turin, Kilmaine is one of a number of 12th
century castles which were built in Kilmaine by the Burke (De
Burgos) family. Others in the area included Elistron, Cregduff and
Killernan. At Ardkill near Kilmaine a fine windmill was built in
1787 by D Browne Esquire. |
