Kiltimagh is a quaint
town located right in the heart of the county Mayo making it an
ideal base to explore the west of Ireland. The town is noted for its
fine 19th century artisan village theme evident in the shop facades
and the picturesque market square.
Kiltimagh has a rich history and was the birthplace of Raifteirí -
the blind poet. Both the 8th century cell and 12th century parish
church (originally thatched), were restored some years ago, where
possible, using the original stone.
A short distance from Kiltimagh is the privately owned Killedan
House, where the poet Raftery worked in his youth. The recently
restored 19th century school now displays the remaining artefacts
from the old national schools in the area. At one time, the
blacksmith provided one of the most important services to the town.
The latest working forge in Kiltimagh closed in 1989. In 1993 it was
restored to its present state as a museum displaying the tools and
implements of the blacksmith.
Visitor attractions include, the Town Museum, Station Master's
Exhibition Centre and Sculpture Park, all located in the tastefully
restored area of the Old Railway Station. The Tir na nOg Venture Fun
Park in the town is aptly named. This fun park provides an
enchanting area with play structures maginatively designed and
fashioned from environmentally friendly materials.
The town hosts a number of major festivals each year. The St.
Patrick's Day Pageant and Parade in Kiltimagh is a seven day
celebration of Irish tradition and culture with visitors from home
and abroad descending on the town for the festivities. 'In Sight of
Raftery'/An Béal Oscailte is held on the June Bank Holiday Weekend.
This annual festival of stories, traditional music, creative writing
workshops, children's activities and much more plays an enormous
role in reviving the culture and traditions through storytelling,
music, dance and pageantry.
There is a bridge on each of the approach roads to Kiltimagh – the
town is effectively an island at the intersection of 3 rivers. The
Pollagh, Glore and Gweestion, offer good brown trout fishing and are
all tributaries of the River Moy which is a mere 20 minutes drive
away. Kiltimagh is a good central location for the plentiful salmon
and trout lakes and rivers of Mayo.
