Knock is a small town
located right in the heart of County Mayo. It is situated 19km south
west of the Ireland West Airport – formally known as Knock
International Airport.
Knock is known worldwide as is a major international Catholic
pilgrimage and prayer site. On August 21st, 1879, the Virgin Mary,
St Joseph and St John the Evangelist, appeared on the south gable of
Knock Parish Church. This Apparition was witnessed by fifteen local
people, young and old. In the 20th century it became one of Europe's
major Catholic Marian shrines, alongside Lourdes and Fatima.
One and a half million pilgrims visit Knock Shrine annually. It was
visited by Pope John Paul II, a supporter of devotion to the Virgin
Mary, in 1979 to commemorate the centenary of the apparition. Mother
Teresa of Calcutta visited the Shrine in June 1993. Knock Shrine is
open all year round. The main pilgrimage season extends from the
last Sunday in April until the second Sunday in October.
The Knock Museum captures the unique story of the Knock Apparition
of 1879. It profiles the fifteen ordinary people who witnessed an
extraordinary event which saw the transformation of Knock, a small
rural village in County Mayo, into an international Marian Shrine.
The museum also places the apparition in the context of life in
1879, from living in the thatched house to working in the forge.
Like most places in Mayo, fishing is a popular activity in the
locality. Eaton's Lake near Knock, supports good stock of bream, and
fishing stands have been erected to facilitate the coarse angler.
There are also excellent golf courses in nearby Claremorris,
Ballyhaunis, Ballinrobe and Swinford.
