Mulranny is a
beautiful seaside village situated on the narrow strip of land that
separates Blacksod Bay and Clew Bay. It is located at the entrance
to the beautiful Carraun Peninsula with Achill Island a further 14km
to the west.
Malranny has a long sandy blue flag beach which has made it a
favourite family holiday destination for generations. Shore fishing
is popular among angling enthusiasts and sea angling can also be
arranged locally. Licensed charter boats are available to take
anglers to the best fishing waters. After an enjoyable day's fishing
visitors can enjoy the friendly ambience in local pubs in the
evenings.
The World Class Great Western Greenway (Westport - Achill) is a
43.5km traffic free cycling and walking facility which primarily
follows the line of the famous Great Western Midlands Railway. This
route, which passes through Mulranny, offers gentle gradients and
some of the most idyllic scenery in the west of Ireland. The route
forms part of the National Cycle Network and it is the longest off
road cycling experience in Ireland.
The coastline around Mulranny is really breathtaking and ideal for
both hiking and cycling. Achill Island is less than 20 minutes away
(accessible by land bridge). The famous Croagh Patrick is less than
35 minutes drive away and while it is a challenging climb for any
walker, the views from the top are spectacular.
Mulranny is the home of colourful giant fuchsias and a number of
exotic plants. The seashore in Mulranny is fringed by Mediterranean
heath, a plant that in Ireland is restricted to county Mayo. This
plant life is celebrated each summer during the Mulranny
Mediterranean Heather Festival .
Mulranny Golf Club is very scenic 9-hole links course overlooking
Clew Bay, with Croagh Patrick across the bay providing a majestic
backdrop. The Nephin Beg mountain range is visible towards the north
with the Partry Hills, Sheffr Hills and the Mulrea Mountains all on
the southside. The course is also flanked by two Blue Flag beaches.
Mulranny Golf Club is one of the oldest courses in Connaught and is
an unique experience of links golf set on the shores of the Atlantic
Ocean.
14km north of Mulranny is Ballycroy National Park. It comprises of
11,000 hectares of Atlantic blanket bog and mountainous terrain,
covering a vast uninhabited and unspoilt wilderness dominated by the
Nephin Beg mountain range. Between Nephin Beg and Slieve Carr lie
the Scardaun Loughs. Greenland White-fronted geese, Golden Plover,
Red Grouse and Otters are just some of the important fauna found
within the Park.
Mulranny has historic connections with the famed pirate queen, Grace
O’Malley (Granuaile), and Rossturk Castle near Mulranny was one of
the strongholds of the famous O’Malley Clan.
Mulranny is sometimes spelt as Malaranny, Mallaranny Mullaranny or
Mullranny. In Irish the name means "the hill-brow of the ferns" |
