Shrule is a small
village in south east Mayo which is situated on the main road from
Galway to Castlebar. The village nestles along the banks of the
Black River, and is mainly on the Mayo side of the boundary between
Counties Mayo and Galway.
Shrule is just 25km from Galway City. Approaching it from Galway,
the ruins of Shrule Castle - a fortification built by the Norman
deBurgo family - dominates the view. The ruin is unsafe and is
closed to the public.
The ruins of six Norman castles can be found in the locality. The
Normans made Shrule a market town, which stayed as such until the
twentieth century, the last fairs and marts being held in the 1960s.
On the eastern half of the Shrule parish there are about 30 ring
forts and a crannog .
Shrule is centrally located for trips to Mayo and Galway. Shrule is
also close to Cong and Connemara if you like sight-seeing. The town
is within easy reach of Lough Mask and Lough Corrib and has four
pubs and a hackney service. |
