Swinford, a former
market town, is situated on a tributary of the famous River Moy in
the eastern part of Mayo. This lively town is located 18 km from
Ireland West Airport Knock (formerly known as Knock International
Airport) and is 28km from Castlebar – the county town of Mayo.
Like many places in county Mayo, Swinford is famous for its fishing
waters, in particular the Callow lakes which yield excellent brown
trout. Swinford is also within close proximity of the great fishing
lakes of Conn and Cullin.
Swinford hosts one of the County Mayo’s largest summer festivals -
Siamsa Sraide Swinford, (Fun in the Streets of Swinford). This
Street Festival takes place annually over the August Bank Holiday
Weekend. This is a festival of pageantry, ceili dancing, and
heritage displays depicting much of the traditions of East Mayo.
Swinford Golf Club is a delightful mature 9 hole parkland course in
a beautiful setting. With mature trees coming into play accuracy is
required off the tee before playing to well protected green. The
club was founded in 1922, and measures 5502 metres with a par of 70
and a standard scratch of 68. It is located in Brabazon Park, near
the town centre.
