Tourmakeady is a
rural area in south west Mayo located between the shores of Lough
Mask and the Partry Mountains, and covers an area from Srah to
Maamtrasna. It is situated close to the border with Co Galway and
lies within the largest Gaeltacht (Irish speaking) region in
Ireland. A tiny village with the same name is located on the shores
of Lough Mask.
The Tourmakeady region is noted for its rugged and picturesque
scenery. Tourmakeady is renowned for its fishing, wonderful walks,
and natural waterfall located in Tourmakeady Woods. Tourmakeady,
together with neighbouring Partry, make up the full parish of
Ballyovey.
The Irish name for the region is Tuar Mhic Éadaigh ( meaning the
Bleach Field of MacCeadaigh) . This is anglicised as either
Tourmakeady or Toormakeady.
The English actor Robert Shaw, best known for his work in 'Jaws',
'The Sting', 'A Man for All Seasons' and 'From Russia with Love',
lived for seven years in Tourmakeady, until his death in 1978. In
2008, a stone memorial was erected in his honour. The memorial,
overlooking Lough Mask, bears an inscription to the actor whose love
for his adopted Gaeltacht village was evident to all.
