Athboy is a
small town in Co Meath located 17km west of Navan and lying close to
the border with Co Westmeath. The town is situated on the Yellow
Ford River
In medieval times Athboy was a walled stronghold of the Pale. Owen
Roe O'Neill captured it in 1643, and in 1649 Oliver Cromwell camped
his army on the Hill of Ward overlooking the town. The Hill of Ward
itself was the location for the pagan feast of Samhain, the
precursor of modern day Halloween.
The festival heralded
the beginning of Winter. The tower of the local Church of Ireland is
a remnant of a 14th century Carmelite priory. Behind the church are
the remains of the town’s medieval walls.
Today Athboy is a bustling town with traditional Irish pubs,
restaurants, coffee shops and two fine hotels. Athboy is located in
the heart of the Boyne Valley, an area steeped in history, heritage
and world renowned sites such as Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth,
Bective Abbey, Mellifont Abbey and the Hill of Tara.
The town is also
surrounded by fine golf courses and horseracing tracks . Royal Tara,
Trim, Headfort and Mullingar Golf Clubs are all within easy driving
distance of the town . Major racecourses nearby include the Curragh,
Punchestown, Fairyhouse, and Naas.
