Bettystown is
a seaside village in south County Meath close to the border with
Dublin. Together with the close neighbouring villages of Laytown and
Mornington it comprises the census town of
Laytown-Bettystown-Mornington.
The main attractions in Bettystown are its fine sandy beach and its
superb golf course. The beach stretches all the way from Laytown to
the mouth of the river Boyne at Mornington. For generations the
beach has been a haven for the city dwellers of Dublin.
The Laytown &
Bettystown Golf Course is a traditional links course, measuring
5,852 m off the white stakes with a par of 71 and a standard scratch
of 72, indicating how tough the old Links plays particularly when
the wind blows. The course has a fine clubhouse together with
practice areas and putting greens. Laytown & Bettystown is the home
course of former Irish professional golfer, Des Smyth.
Funtasia Bettystown is one of Ireland 's leading indoor family
entertainment centres. Funtasia has something for all the family. It
boasts a fairground on the roof with rides galore including mini
roller coasters, the gyro loop and the drop zone. There is bowling,
dodgems, the jungle zone interactive play area and lots more
including simulator movie theatres and all the latest video games to
be enjoyed.
The world renowned “Tara Brooch” was discovered on the beach in
Bettystown. The brooch dates from 700AD and is now kept in the Royal
Academy Collection of the National Museum, Dublin. The quality of
the craftmanship, the detail of its ornamentation and the
preciousness of its materials all seem to indicate wealthy, if not
royal origins. |
