Clonard is a
small village in County Meath, Ireland located on the regional road
between the towns of Kinnegad and Enfield.
Clonard is notable for being one of the earliest Christian
settlements in Ireland, being linked with the first Irish bishop
Palladius c.450. It was also the location of an early medieval
monastery, founded in the 6th century by St. Finnian.
Clonard today shows
few signs of its ancient glory. A 12th century motte, the remains of
an Anglo-Norman fortification, is the only significant reminder of
it's past importance |
