Donore is a
small village situated in the picturesque Boyne Valley, 6km south
west of Drogheda.
Donore has become a favourite stopping off point for visitors to
Newgrange, the Battle of the Boyne site at Old Bridge House, Hill of
Slane and many other ancient sites and attractions in the historical
Boyne valley.
Just outside Donore is the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre. This centre
interprets the Neolithic monuments of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth.
The extensive exhibition includes a full scale replica of the
chamber at Newgrange as well as a full model of one of the smaller
tombs at Knowth. All admission to Newgrange and Knowth is through
the Visitor Centre, there is no direct access to these monuments.
Visitors are brought from the Visitor Centre to the monuments by
shuttle bus.
Newgrange itself was constructed more than 5,000 years ago making it
older than Stonehenge and the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt.
Newgrange was built during the Neolithic or New Stone Age by a
farming community that prospered on the rich lands of the Boyne
Valley. Knowth and Dowth are similar mounds that together with
Newgrange have been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
3km north of Donore is the Battle of the Boyne site. The Battle of
the Boyne Visitor Centre is located in the recently restored 18th
century Oldbridge House, which is on the battle site. Access to the
Visitor Centre includes access to the formal gardens. |
