Duleek is a
town in north east County Meath, Ireland, close to the Louth border.
It lies in the quiet valley of the Nanny River and is situated just
9km south east of Drogheda.
Duleeek is a very historic town and its story over the centuries is
brought to life in the Duleek Heritage Trail. This trail was
conceived as a series of stepping stones through the village and its
long and varied history. It takes in historic buildings, ruins,
ancient crosses, bridges and the Battle of the Boyne site
Duleek is only 5km from the Newgrange Visitors Centre in Donore.
This is starting point for anyone wishing to visit the Megalithic
Passage Tomb at Newgrange itself. This tomb was built about 3200BC
and is now a World UNESCO Heritage Site.
On the winter
solstice a shaft of sunlight shines through the roof box over the
entrance and penetrates the passage to light up the chamber. This
dramatic event lasts for 17 minutes at dawn from 19-23 December.
Visitors to the chamber on regular tours experience a simulated
Solstice using electric light.
In addition to Newgrange, Duleek is an ideal base to explore other
historic sites in the region including other burial sites at Knowth
and Dowth, the High Crosses of Monasterboice, the Hill of Tara, and
