Gormansown is
a small village situated on the northern banks of the Delvin River
which forms the boundary between Counties Meath and Dublin. It is
located 6km south of the seaside resort of Laytown and 6km north
west of the large town of Balbriggan in Co Dublin.
The most famous landmark in the town is Gormanston Castle. It was
built by the Preston family in 1786, on the site of an older castle
erected in 1372. The castle is now a boarding school owned by the
Franciscan Order.
Gormanstown is a good base to explore the coastal resorts of Laytown
and Bettystown, the historic Boyne Valley, Slane Castle, Drogheda
and north Co Dublin. There are excellent golf courses at Laytown &
Bettystown and at Bellewstown (7km).
There is also a
racecourse in Bellewstown which holds two festivals; one at the
begining of July and one at the end of August. There is also horse
racing on the beach at Laytown. |
