Nobber is a
village in north County Meath. It is located on the Navan -
Kingscourt road about 20km north of Navan. The River Dee flows close
by the village and Whitewood Lake is 5km to the north west.
In recent times several "high crosses" were discovered in the
villages old cemetery (St. Johns) dating from around the 10th
century. These are smaller and less ornate than typical Celtic high
crosses found in Co Meath. This find is significant because it
suggests that a previously unrecorded monastic settlement once
existed on the site of the village.
Nobber is reputed to be the birthplace of the blind harpist Turlough
O'Carolan in 1670 and a monument in the town is a testament to the
popularity of this renowned musician |
